The 1918 Cellars Wine Tasting Room & Bistro at Castle Farms, featuring tasting, glass, and bottle purchases of our own label of Michigan-produced wines. You can view our food menu here.
The 1918 Cellars Bistro & Wine Tasting Room is located in the Queen’s Tavern of Castle Farms, with both indoor seating and outdoor patio seating available. The Tavern features a barn wood ceiling built in the 1960s and a herringbone-pattern floor with tiles dating back to the original 1918 construction. Combined with the original stonework, these historical accents create a completely unique experience for wine tasting or a great spot for lunch.
The 1918 Cellars Bistro is an extension of the Wine Tasting Room at Castle Farms, featuring fresh, homemade starters, salads, sandwiches, desserts and more. We even have items for the little ones and nonalcoholic beverage options such as Northwoods Soda.
We also offer products from our local partners, including Cherry Republic, Great Lakes Potato Chip Company, and Northwoods Soda.

Things happen at Boyne Mountain. If you’ve been here, you know. If you haven’t, take our word. We understand how to have fun. And not just the kind of fun people talk about at work on Monday morning – but the kind that keeps you smiling to yourself all week long.
Castle Farms of Charlevoix is one of Michigan’s premier historic tour attractions and destination wedding venues. This beautiful French Renaissance castle built in 1918 features soaring stone towers, romantic courtyards and magnificent gardens, plus Norm, the Castle’s very own dragon! Museum quality collections showcased throughout the Castle include antique toys, castles, and royalty memorabilia from around the world. The Castle’s Outdoor Model Railroad is the largest in Michigan, with 68 G-scale trains steaming across more than 1/2 mile of track. The Castle also provides the perfect venue for weddings, proms, corporate events, or private parties. Open year round, Castle Farms is listed on the National and State Historic Registries.
Over the past 100+ years, the farm has seen a variety of commodities, and started with cherry trees, a couple hogs and a few head of cattle. Since then the farm has been home to acres of asparagus, apples, corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, peaches and even 500 head of beef cattle, just to name a few…
The farm started in 1914 (hence the name, Cellar 1914) by a gentleman named Vet Shooks. He drove by this property on a weekly basis on the way to church and noticed a cherry tree growing on the southwest side of the road. Up on the hill with Lake Michigan close by, the cherries were producing quality fruit due to the close proximity of the lake. Vet made the comment to his family that one day he would like to buy that property because of how well it had produced those wild cherries, so that is exactly what he did and the rest is history.
Flash forward into the fourth generation, the farm has a very different look and focus- less field crops and livestock and more fruit- cherries and grapes. Grapes, like cherries, benefit from the lake. The newest direction of the farm helps to bring the new (grapes/wine) in with the old (history). Our tasting room was designed with the history of the farm in mind. Placed at the heart of the farm, with views of Lake Michigan, the tasting room and production facility made sense.
We finished the interior work ourselves and incorporated several pieces of rich history from around the farm to help with the details. The back bar is constructed from barn wood that is over 100 years old, the crown molding is old boards that cattle have rubbed on for the past 40 years, something that is unique and hard to recreate. There is a breakfast table in the tasting room that three of the four generations have sat at for countless breakfasts made by Doris “Gram” Shooks who married Marvin Shooks (Second Generation). The décor is full or stories, including a trunk that carried our ancestors belongings from the old country, the deed framed and hung on the wall, cherry tanks with the original farm name embedded in the tasting bar, and cherry lugs that help to display the bottles of wine for purchase. The story is everywhere you look.

When we took over the cute little coffee shop in our downtown, we wanted a name that was catchy but not trendy, easy to say yet interesting at the same time, something that invoked a feeling of comfort and reflected our vision for the shop’s future… knowing we wanted an animal in the name for branding purposes, we pondered many different options but ultimately were drawn to the goat! After we honed in on our animal, we wanted to pay tribute to our community so we decided to tie in the word “iron.” Thus, Iron Goat Coffee was born! And to stay humble to our roots, we brand every piece of merchandise with our city’s zip code “49727” on the back!
(As a side note, one of the stories of the origin of coffee involves a farmer witnessing his goats dancing in a field and it turns out they were eating coffee beans…it was fate!)
Our clubhouse – bar is open and we are serving grab and go food and drinks. Boxed lunches available. Our golf course is walkable and soon we will be allowing carts.

“In April 2004 Short’s Brewing Co. opened it’s doors in the Village of Bellaire. Beer was the mission and liberation was the movement. The philosophy was to bring an appreciation of craft beer to Northern Michigan with product education and creativity. Today, Short’s Brewing Co. continues the effort to educate and liberate consumers. We believe in the power of the smallness and take pride in our hands on, “mom-and-pop” approach and the energy we put into the quality of our beer, food, staff, customers and facilities.
