Elk Rapids Community Paddle (Harbor Days)

Grab your paddleboard, kayak, or canoe and join Paddle Antrim for a slow out and back paddle. Check-in at 6:30 pm and we will launch as a group at 6:45 pm. We encourage all ages and types of paddle crafts to join us on the water for these slow paddles. Paddles last approximately one hour on the water, are free, and no pre-registration is required.  All paddlers must bring their own craft/boat, paddle, and a pfd (life jacket). All ages are welcome but children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult out on the water. All paddlers must complete a paddling event waiver prior to participation.

Paddle Season Kick-Off Gathering

Join Paddle Antrim for a special paddling event to kick-off the paddling season on the Chain of Lakes Water Trail with Short’s Brewing Company! Grab your paddleboard, kayak or paddle craft of choice and a life jacket and join us for an hour- long paddle on Elk River followed by a gathering, 2 minutes up 31, at Short’s Pull Barn. No registration required but all participants must fill out a waiver.

GLCO presents The Hummel Trio

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra presents The Hummel Trio with Libor Ondras and Paul Sonner, as part of the season’s Sunday Recital Series. The program will include works by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Joseph Haydn, Johan Halvorsen, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  The trio includes Dr.Libor Ondras, viola; Emily Grabinski-Conklin, piano; and Andrew Laven, cello.  The trio will be joined by GLCO Concertmaster and violinist Paul Sonner.
Generous support for the Sunday Recital Series is provided by Carolyn Klender.

GLCO presents Take to the Sky

Take flight with GLCO in a concert inspired by birds! Featuring award-winning violin soloist, Dmitri Berlinsky.

Beethoven, Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68, “Pastoral Symphony” or Recollections of Country Life” (First Movement) expresses Beethoven’s affinity for nature and his love for walks through the country outside Vienna.

Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending is a gentle, introspective work.  It is one of the supreme achievements of English landscape painting extoling the untroubled joys of nature, the call of the lark, and the genial folk music of earlier times.

Resphighi, Gli Uccelli “The Birds” is a suite of pieces is based on various 18th century composers. The Birds is an attempt to depict the bird songs and fluttering wings of the Dove, the Hen, the Nightingale and the Cuckoo.

Einojuhani Rautavaara, Cantus Arcticus, Op. 61 Probably Rautavaara’s best-known work, Concerto for Birds and Orchestra, incorporates tape recordings of birdsongs recorded near the Arctic Circle and on the bogs of Liminka in northern Finland.

This event will be held at The Great Lakes Center for the Arts. Pre-Concert talk by Music Director Libor Ondras at 6:00 PM. Reserved Seating: $65, $45, $35.  Veterans, active service members, ages 18 and under are FREE. Tickets at glcorchestra.org or 231.487.0010

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra presents free Double Reed Stampede Concert

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will present a free, public concert on Sunday, March 27, at 4 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 101 State St., Charlevoix.
Entitled “Double Reed Stampede”, the concert features woodwind instruments with two reeds, such as oboe and bassoon. Musicians will draw from a collection of songs, which may include “Fan Fair Warning” by Margaret Weait; “The London Waits” by Christopher Weait; “The London Trio #1 in C Major” by Franz Joseph Haydn (arranged by Alan Hawkins); “Adagio in G Major, K. 580a” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; “Twinkle Variations” by Robert Stephenson and more.
