GLCO presents Aspects of America

“Aspects of America,” the opening concert of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s ’22 – ’23 season, will be held at 7 pm on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor. The journey through the history of American music features composers from the late 19th century to present day, and highlights the 2022 Charles F. Davis Young Artist Competition winner Karlie Thomas, 15, from Charlevoix, on saxophone.

This program includes compositions that showcase the developments in American classical music pivotal in establishing the characteristics that set it apart from its European ancestors. Many classical composers of the 20th century captured a uniquely American spirit, incorporating several musical traditions (such as pop, blues, folk, rag, tango, ultra-modern, and European music).  Composers represented are Grant Still, Piazzolla, Barber, Villa-Lobos, Milhaud, Kernis, Bolcom, Paus, and Gould.

A pre-concert talk by Libor Ondras, orchestra conductor and music director, starts at 6 p.m. in the Community Engagement Room.

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is a non-profit organization headquartered in downtown Petoskey. Tickets from $35 – $65 for the Oct. 1 event are available at www.glcorchestra.org.  The concert is free for veterans, active service members and students 18 and under by calling 231-487-0010.
