The barriers that keep kids from staying in school and graduating are numerous and widespread.  Some are easy to spot, like academic problems or homelessness.  But many others are less obvious – bullying, untreated medical or dental issues, or lack of school supplies and clothes.  Communities In Schools is dedicated to helping identify and remove any and all barriers for the students we serve so they can stay in school and succeed in life.

At Communities In Schools, we work in schools full-time to remove those barriers by building one-on-one relationships that empower student to stay in school and succeed in life.  Because we’re in schools all day every day, we see the unique needs of each student and partner with teachers and community to address them.  Whether it’s clean clothes, help with school work, or emotional support to help a child cope with and recover from a traumatic event, we connect students with the relationships and resources they need to succeed.

Founded in 2020, in East Jordan, MI, The OtherSide Fertilizer Company, offers its own custom blend of lawn fertilizer, Premium Turf Fertilizer, to the homeowners and turfgrass professionals of Northern Michigan.  Our special blend was designed and tested, right here, in Northern Michigan and is trusted by lawn care professionals, municipalities and schools across the area.

Established in 1984 as a non-profit organization, Challenge Mountain was the first independent adaptive skiing program in northern Michigan. Today, Challenge Mountain offers adaptive recreational and social opportunities that continue to enrich lives and empower individuals living with disabilities. Each year, Challenge Mountain connects children, youth and adults living with disabilities through adaptive skiing, equine therapy, ropes challenge course, adaptive biking, sailing and SPIRIT Day Camp. Individuals of all ages and abilities can take part in Challenge Mountain’s programs at no cost, including those living with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities

Opening in 2021, Training Wheels Childcare Center, Inc. will provide daycare services to East Jordan area families needing care for children younger than Kindergarten age. Separated into three rooms in order to enhance children’s opportunities in a developmentally appropriate atmosphere, Training Wheels Childcare Center will strive to live their mission:  provide quality childcare by promoting the growth of physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs while recognizing that each child in our care is unique and treasured.

Camp Daggett, located on the shore of beautiful Walloon Lake, is a non-profit organization founded in 1925. Camp’s mission “To provide quality character building experiences for young people through educational and recreational activities,” has expanded programming over its almost 100 years to include 8-weeks of overnight and day summer camp; summertime wilderness adventure excursions; year-round indoor and outdoor Adventure Education and leadership training as well as lodge and facilities rentals for individuals, organizations and corporate entities. Classic Car Show on the beautiful South Arm of Lake Charlevoix in Downtown East Jordan.

The Jordan Valley Community Band is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary during the 2020 season. The band will hold a special 30th Anniversary Concert on May 3rd at 7:00 PM. Our volunteer musicians range from students to senior citizens that rehearse at the East Jordan High School Band room on Thursday evenings from 7-9 PM. Rebecca Palmiter directs this group of musicians who represent Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego Counties. The annual winter concert is the first Sunday in December, the annual spring concert is the first Sunday in May. These concerts are held at the East Jordan High School auditorium at 3:00 PM (May 2020 Concert at special time – 7:00 PM) and are free. Following the May concert, the audience is cordially invited to an Afterglow to celebrate our anniversary. During the month of July, the band performs in the bandshell in East Jordan’s Memorial Park on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM. New members are always welcome.
