SUMMARY:Writing from Nature\, and the Nature of Writing with James McCullough
DESCRIPTION:Bring gratitude\, curiosity\, pen\, paper\, lunch\, water\, and head east of Wolverine\, into the vast Pigeon River Forest\, to Greenwood Foundation\, a 2000-acre non-profit wildlife haven where we will forget about the world for a while\, lighten up\, create new friends; observe the living earth; write and reflect in the tradition of American nature writing. We will consider how our stories can shape the attitudes of future generations. Come with your friendly disposition\, observant eyes and reflective mind. Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear\, including something for sitting on dewy ground and clothing that protects from inclement weather.  Full bathrooms will be available\, and coffee will be provided\, but bring your own journals\, pens\, food and drinks ample enough for a full day of activity.  Bring a hat\, bug repellent if you need it\, and sunscreen. This event will be held rain or shine. Indoor space is available. The focus of the morning session\, after we meet and greet\, will be to introduce Nature Writing and Literature as a genre- discuss narrative\, individual goals; read and discuss sample literature; conduct writing exercises focused on keen observations\, detailed descriptions\, and personal reflections. We will create as much rough writing as we can before lunch break so we can work with it after lunch when we ask\, “Now what?”  We will share in small groups\, address\, possibilities with purpose\, form and the art of the first-person narrative. We will help each other consider what audiences might find compelling\, and how to connect with them.  We will note what could or should develop\, what can be cut\, tightened or turned to active voice\, creating versions for varying effects. There will be time for revisions and mentorship. We will close the day by celebrating our accomplishments with our readings\, final thoughts\, and feedback. \nJames McCullough grew up in Petoskey in the 60’s and 70’s\, fly fishing spring to fall\, hunting fall to winter\, skiing until spring. He is an award-winning author and an educator who shares his love for nature\, encourages close observation\, reflection\, and creativity\, as we leave behind our best memories for future generations.\nLIMITED TO 15 PARTICIPANTS. \n

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing with Maureen Stine
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\n\nForest bathing is a gentle\, guided experience that invites participants to slow down\, unplug\, and relax in nature. Rather than focusing on distance\, speed\, or observation\, forest bathing emphasizes being present—using all the senses to connect with the natural world. \nUnlike hiking\, birding\, or other outdoor recreation\, there is no goal to accomplish and nothing to “do.” This experience offers space to rest\, wander\, and rediscover a sense of calm and awareness in a supportive\, natural setting. \nYour guide will be Maureen Stine\, Certified Forest Therapy Guide (ANFT — Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs) \nPlease note: this program is designed for adults ages 18 and older. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nA slow\, easy meander outdoors\, accessible to a wide range of abilities\nInvitation‑based guidance that encourages curiosity\, relaxation\, and sensory awareness\nOpportunities to engage all five senses—sight\, sound\, touch\, smell\, and awareness of movement\nA blend of gentle wandering\, moments of rest\, and quiet reflection\nFacilitated small group gatherings\, balanced with solo time for personal experience\nA welcoming\, non‑judgmental environment with no pressure to perform\, participate\, or share\n\nForest bathing is simply a chance to be in nature—awakening the senses\, easing the mind\, and allowing the forest to do what it does best. \nwww.miravenhill.org
